Background

Dr. MacLean earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Arizona State University. He has been a faculty member at Buffalo State since 1997. Additional positions have included Visiting Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, University at Buffalo, SUNY, Associate Research Scientist, Research Institute on Addictions, and NIMH Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Addictive Behavior Research Center, University of Washington.

Students Mentored

Dr. MacLean has mentored over 60 student honors theses, independent studies, and summer research fellowships.  He has been awarded the President's Award for Excellence as an Undergraduate Research Mentor.  Students he has mentored include:

Rachel Caputi Daws earned a joint Masters Degree in Public Health/Social Work at the University at Buffalo.  She is currently the HCV Program Coordinator at Boston Medical Center.

Matthew Lee earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Arizona State University was a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University.

Viktoriya Magid earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University at Buffalo and went on to be Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina.  She is currently in private practice.

My research focuses on a number of areas related to adolescence and young adulthood: Etiology and Prevention of Substance Use-Related Problems;  Impulsivity and Self-Regulation; Identity Development; Coping and Affect; ADHD.

Dr. MacLean is currently involved in several research projects, including:

  • Identity Development in College Students

Dr. MacLean frequently provides training workshops on Motivational Interviewing and working effectively with young people for organizations throughout New York.
